    Bankrate.com. Compare interest rates, bank services and more on auto loans, mortgages, CD's, etc. You can search locally or for best in the country. Comprehensive, objective and free.
  • HSH.com - Mortgage Information
    hsh.com. HSH Associates, Financial Publishers, is the nation's largest publisher of mortgage and consumer loan information. This one website reviews all of the rates and provides a shopping mart for rates offered by lenders.
  • Mortgage Professor
    The Mortgage Professor website was developed to answer a wide range of consumer questions about mortgages. The webmaster is Jack M. Guttentag, now Professor of Finance Emeritus, formerly Jacob Safra Professor of International Banking, at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

    BB Wise Giving Alliance (The Alliance was formed by the merger of the National Charities Information Bureau and the Council of Better Business Bureaus' Foundation and its Philanthropic Advisory Service.) Evaluates each charity in relation to the 23 provisions of the voluntary CBBB Standards for Charitable Solicitations.
  • Charitynavigator.org
    www.charitynavigator.org lists relief agencies that get three and four star ratings - the highest that the group gives out.They do this by evaluating the financial health of over four thousand of America's largest charities so that people interested in donating to those charities can be assured that their dollars are being spent wisely and efficiently.

    Congress.org is a free, public service of Capitol Advantage. Congress.org allows users to: identify and send messages to their elected leaders in Congress, the White House, and state legislatures, communicate to their leaders via e-mail, letter, or fax, post these letters online with Letters to Leaders and read what other Americans are saying to elected officials, or find and contact local and national media by ZIP code or by state with Media Guide. You may have your representative's votes sent to you weekly via e-mail with MegaVote.
  • FirstGov.gov
    FirstGov.gov. A good first stop when looking for federal or state government information. FirstGov is a public-private partnership, led by a cross-agency board and administered by the Office of FirstGov.
  • Postal Service
    US Postal Service. Look here for zip codes, change of address forms, postal rates, buy postage through the mail. Also includes a helpful movers guide.
  • Social Security
    US Social Security Administration. On this site you will find social security benefits information, forms, Medicare information and more. You can apply here for social security online if you are 62 or older.
  • vote-smart.org
    Project Vote Smart is a national library of factual information on 40,000 candidates for public office including President of the United States to state legislature to local elected officials. They cover them in five basic areas: backgrounds, issue positions, voting records, campaign finances and performance evaluations made by over 100 liberal to conservative special interest groups. In addition they interview presidential, congressional, gubernatorial and state legislative candidates and provide special services on issues for journalists, teachers and students. This is the place to start to get to know your candidates.

    Moving.com is a one stop resource for your moving needs, from learning about your new community, to finding a Realtor, mortgage lender, insurance agent, mover and more. You can sign up with their move manager for a timetable and list of items you need to take care of. They'll also send e-mail reminders of the items on your list.

  Purchasing a car

  • Carfax.com
    Carfax.com. Researches a car based on its vehicle ID number (VIN). This service does have a cost. You can input the VIN of a car and it will check numerous databases for the registration, if the car was leased, purchased, a fleet car and mileage every time it went through DMV (shows every time it was sold.) It also searches for reports of salvage, lemons, rebuilt, flood damage, and fraudulent, rolled back or broken odometers.
  • Kelley Blue Book
    Kbb.com. Kelley Blue Book has been guiding car buyers for over 75 years. You can find out the value of your current car, price a new car, check on financing, insurance, lemons, warranties, and more.
  • National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
    nhtsa.dot.gov. The US Department of Transportation site provides vehicle and equipment information such as recalls, problems and issues for each make of car, as well as safety testing results.

    Before you head overseas, check in with the State Department to find out about travel warnings for global hot spots or to get information on passports or immunizations. Even if you're headed for a relatively safe county, you can find basic information on traffic, crime, and medical facilities.
  • Quikbook.com
    Quikbook gives you the lowest rates in quality U.S. hotels, so you won't end up in some dive just because you want to save a few bucks. Each hotel listing gives you "Q Ratings" that score the hotels and room features, service levels, and business amenities.
  • Fodors.com
    Select a world region and then a specific destination to get a mini-guide, so you'll know where to eat in Ft. Lauderdale or shop in Paris. You'll also find feature articles on a variety of travel topics, and there are plenty of message boards where you can ask or answer questions about your favorite vacation spots.

  Stop telemarketers and junk mail
  • national do not call registry
    Most telemarketers cannot call your telephone number if it is in the National Do Not Call Registry. You can register your home and mobile phone numbers for free. Your registration will be effective for five years. Check the website for your effective date. The National Do Not Call Registry is managed by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency.
  • Pennsylvania do not call
    Pennsylvania has joined a number of other states in developing a "no calls list" for telemarketers. Residents of Pennsylvania can sign up to have their numbers placed on the list, which is published 4 times a year. Telemarketers are required to stop calling numbers that appear on the list at the end of 30 days following the list's publication. You can sign up on the website or by phone. After signing up, check the website for your effective date.
  • junkbusters.com
    This page covers what you can do by yourself about unwanted telemarketing calls, mail, faxes, and email. It also gives some background on direct marketing and the laws governing it.

    The Princeton Review site is a great place to learn about different schools, find out how to raise test scores, fill out online applications, and explore ways to pay for school. This is a for profit company that sells services in all these areas. They do, however, offer a great deal of information for free. Be sure to review their privacy statement to understand how your personal information will be used.
  • fastweb.com
    FastWeb helps students make the decisions that shape their lives: choosing a college, paying for college and finding jobs during and after college. The service is free. This is an advertising supported website, however. You will need to fill out the forms carefully to avoid signing up for charged services. Be sure to check their privacy policy before joining to fully understand how they will use your personal information. This site will actively sell personal information if you permit them to.
